The Industry:
Waste disposal, energy production and environmental depletion are of global concern. The move to reduce greenhouse gasses and utilize alternative fuel sources is slowed by economics and infrastructure. As a “norm” energy is produced by conventional methods and sold to the grid. Waste is generated in mass volume daily and classified primarily as SMW (solid municipal waste) or specialty waste (which is generally hazardous). When it comes to locating energy suppliers and waste disposal facilities there are a limited number of options.
We estimate that DaimlerChrysler North America spends over $100 million dollars a year on energy, $7 million on solid municipal waste disposal, and an additional $10 million on hazardous waste materials. Automotive manufacturers also spend a great deal of time and money to capture efficiencies and reduce these costs.
